What it measures
Anti-CCP antibodies are antibodies against citrullinated proteins, which are proteins altered by a natural chemical change. They are found in many people with rheumatoid arthritis and are uncommon in people without it. They can appear years before joint symptoms begin.
Why people test it
- Measured when joint pain, stiffness or swelling suggest rheumatoid arthritis.
- Often tested with rheumatoid factor, as anti-CCP is more specific to rheumatoid arthritis.
- Used to help judge how likely early joint swelling is to become rheumatoid arthritis.
Typical range
Results are given in units per millilitre, with a cut-off that varies by lab and method. Your report shows the lab's own cut-off for a positive result.
Finger-prick or vein?
A finger-prick sample is often enough, as antibody tests need only a small amount of serum. A vein sample is taken where a lab or a larger panel needs more blood.
