What it measures
HDL cholesterol as a share of total cholesterol, worked out by the lab from the two results. It carries the same information as the total cholesterol to HDL ratio, shown the other way round.
Why people test it
- Reported on some cholesterol tests alongside HDL and total cholesterol.
- Used as a quick view of how much of the cholesterol in the blood is carried by HDL.
- Anabolic steroids are known to lower HDL, so it is sometimes checked during or after a cycle.
Typical range
Ranges vary between labs, with the method used, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own range. Labs that report it set their own reference values, and many UK reports show the total cholesterol to HDL ratio instead.
Finger-prick or vein?
A finger-prick sample is usually fine for cholesterol tests. A vein draw works too and is used when it is part of a larger panel.
