What it measures
HE4 (human epididymis protein 4) is a protein made in the lining of the ovaries, womb and some other tissues. It is measured in the blood, usually together with CA125, and the two results can be combined in a score called ROMA.
Why people test it
- Measured with CA125 to help judge whether an ovarian cyst or pelvic mass is likely to be cancer.
- Used alongside CA125 to follow ovarian cancer over time.
- Chosen alongside CA125 because endometriosis raises it less often.
Typical range
Ranges vary by lab and method, and levels rise with age, in smokers and when kidney function is lower. Your report shows the lab's own range.
Finger-prick or vein?
A finger-prick sample is often enough, as the test needs only a small amount of serum. A vein sample is taken where a lab or a larger panel needs more blood.
