Pregnancy and trying for a baby

What the NHS, NICE and the RCOG advise on folic acid, vitamin D and what to avoid, from trying for a baby to breastfeeding, with prices per dose.

The NHS advises folic acid and vitamin D when trying for a baby and during pregnancy, and vitamin D while breastfeeding. Iron is added only if a blood test shows it is low, and vitamin A supplements, including cod liver oil, are to be avoided. The charity Tommy's notes that folic acid and vitamin D bought on their own will likely cost less than a pregnancy multivitamin. Some families can get these vitamins free through the NHS Healthy Start scheme.

NHS: Some people need a higher 5mg dose of folic acid, which a GP can prescribe. The NHS page lists who, including people with diabetes or taking epilepsy medicines.
