Full blood test for lifters
The hormone and lipid, liver and kidney panels together, with a full blood count, HbA1c, high-sensitivity CRP and a full thyroid panel.
Need just one of these? A lab test of total cholesterol alone starts at £39.00 all-in, at Better2Know. Every total cholesterol test.
Who it suits
People who train hard, on or off TRT, and want one comprehensive set of results once or twice a year.
The 37 markers
- Testosterone (total)
All the testosterone in the blood, both the part bound to proteins and the free part. - Free testosterone (measured)
The testosterone not bound to SHBG or albumin, measured directly by the lab. - Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)
A protein made in the liver that carries testosterone and oestradiol in the blood. - Oestradiol (sensitive)
Oestradiol measured with an assay built to read the low levels typical in men. - Luteinising hormone (LH)
A pituitary hormone that signals the testes to make testosterone and the ovaries to ovulate. - Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
A pituitary hormone involved in sperm production and egg development. - Prolactin
A pituitary hormone best known for its role in milk production. - Haematocrit
The share of the blood's volume taken up by red cells. - Haemoglobin
The oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. - PSA (total)
A protein made by the prostate, measured in the blood. - Total cholesterol
All the cholesterol carried in the blood by every type of lipoprotein. - HDL cholesterol
Cholesterol carried by high-density lipoprotein. - LDL cholesterol
Cholesterol carried by low-density lipoprotein, usually calculated from the other lipid results. - Non-HDL cholesterol
Total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol. - Triglycerides
The main type of fat carried in the blood. - Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)
The main protein on LDL and other atherogenic particles; one per particle. - Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
An enzyme found mainly in liver cells. - Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)
An enzyme found in the liver, heart and muscles. - Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT)
A liver enzyme that rises with bile duct problems and regular alcohol. - Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
An enzyme from the liver and bones. - Bilirubin (total)
A yellow pigment made when red blood cells are broken down and cleared by the liver. - Albumin
The main protein in blood plasma, made by the liver. - Creatinine
A waste product of muscle, cleared by the kidneys. - eGFR
An estimate of how much blood the kidneys filter, worked out from creatinine, age and sex. - Urea
A waste product of protein breakdown, cleared by the kidneys. - Cystatin C
A protein made by all cells and cleared by the kidneys; not affected by muscle mass. - Red blood cell count
The number of red blood cells in a volume of blood. - White blood cell count
The total number of white blood cells. - Platelet count
The number of platelets, the cell fragments that help blood clot. - Mean cell volume (MCV)
The average size of the red blood cells. - Mean cell haemoglobin (MCH)
The average amount of haemoglobin in each red blood cell. - Mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)
The average concentration of haemoglobin inside the red blood cells. - HbA1c
The share of haemoglobin with sugar attached, an average of blood sugar over two to three months. - High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP)
C-reactive protein measured with an assay that reads the low levels used for heart risk. - Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
The pituitary hormone that tells the thyroid how much hormone to make. - Free thyroxine (free T4)
The unbound form of the thyroid's main hormone. - Free triiodothyronine (free T3)
The unbound form of the active thyroid hormone.
