What it measures
Chromium is a trace element, and this test measures it in whole blood. It is measured mainly in people with metal-on-metal hip replacements, where wear of the implant releases chromium and cobalt into the blood.
Why people test it
- Monitored in people with metal-on-metal hip replacements, as implant wear raises chromium and cobalt.
- Checked after work exposure to chromium, for example in plating or welding.
- Included in some trace element panels.
Typical range
Ranges vary by lab, method, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own range. One NHS trust gives under 40 nmol/L for people without a hip replacement. Source: Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust: Chromium.
Finger-prick or vein?
Taken from a vein, and providers offer it only as a vein draw. Ordinary needles and tubes can add tiny amounts of metal, so labs use trace element tubes.
