What it measures
Globulins are the blood proteins other than albumin, including antibodies and many carrier proteins. Most labs work the result out by taking albumin away from total protein, rather than measuring it directly.
Why people test it
- Reported as part of a liver function test or a general protein check.
- Read alongside albumin, as the balance between the two can shift with liver, kidney or immune conditions.
- An unusual result is used to decide whether a more detailed protein test is needed.
Typical range
Ranges vary by lab, method, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own range. One NHS trust uses 18 to 36 g/L. Source: Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust: Total Protein.
Finger-prick or vein?
A finger-prick sample is usually fine, and vein draws are offered too. It comes from the same sample as total protein and albumin.
