What it measures
TIMP-1 (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1) is a protein that slows the breakdown of collagen and other connective tissue. It is one of the three markers in the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test, which combines them into one score.
Why people test it
- Measured as part of the ELF test, used to assess scarring (fibrosis) in the liver.
- Used in people with fatty liver disease to look for advanced scarring.
- Gives a blood-based estimate of liver scarring without a biopsy.
Typical range
The three ELF markers are usually combined into one score rather than read one by one. Ranges and score cut-offs vary by lab, method, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own.
Finger-prick or vein?
Taken from a vein. Providers offer this test only as a vein draw at a clinic.
