What it measures
The total amount of IgE antibodies in the blood. IgE is the antibody class involved in allergic reactions. A total IgE result does not show what a person is allergic to.
Why people test it
- Investigating allergies, eczema or allergic asthma.
- Measured with specific IgE tests, which look for antibodies to named allergens.
- Investigating some parasitic infections and a fungal lung allergy called ABPA.
Typical range
Gloucestershire Hospitals' laboratory gives a range of 0 to 81 kU/L for ages 15 and over. Ranges vary by lab, method, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own range. Source: Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Pathology: Allergy, total IgE.
Finger-prick or vein?
A finger-prick sample is usually fine for this test, and some providers offer a home kit. Others take blood from a vein, at a clinic or with a visiting nurse.
Total IgE on its own is of limited help in diagnosing an allergy. Some people with allergies have a total IgE within the lab's range.
