What it measures
The total amount of protein in the liquid part of the blood, which is mainly albumin and globulins. It is measured directly, and globulin is often worked out from it by taking away albumin.
Why people test it
- Part of a standard liver function test or general health check.
- Used with albumin to work out the globulin result.
- Measured when looking into dehydration, liver or kidney problems, or unusual antibody levels.
Typical range
Ranges vary by lab, method, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own range. One NHS trust gives 60 to 80 g/L for adults. Source: Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Pathology: Protein (Total).
Finger-prick or vein?
A finger-prick sample is usually fine, and vein draws are offered too.
