Magnesium at a glance

Magnesium is an essential mineral behind several hundred of the body's chemical reactions, from muscle relaxation to nerve signalling. People take it above all for sleep and winding down, and also for stress, migraine and blood pressure. Supplements are sold bound to different partners (glycinate, citrate, oxide, malate, taurate, threonate), which changes how much magnesium each tablet holds and how it sits in the stomach. Blood pressure is its best-studied use, with reviews finding small average reductions; results for sleep, mood and blood sugar are mixed so far. In forums, deeper sleep and fewer night-time cramps are the most common reports, and loose stools with citrate or oxide the most common complaint.

How we work out these prices

We count the elemental magnesium a product provides, not the weight of the whole compound it comes in. If a label states the magnesium amount, we use it. If it only gives the compound's weight, we estimate using a published conversion factor and mark the figure “estimated”. If we cannot tell which the number means, the product is left out until it can be confirmed.
