What it measures
The mix of bacteria in a vaginal swab. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an imbalance of the bacteria normally found in the vagina, and the lab checks the sample for the pattern seen in BV. BV is common and is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection.
Why people test it
- Investigating unusual vaginal discharge, especially with a strong fishy smell.
- Checking whether symptoms come from BV rather than thrush or an STI.
- Checking again when BV keeps coming back.
Typical range
There is no numeric range. The result is reported as positive or negative for BV, and some labs list the bacteria found. The report shows how that lab reports it.
Finger-prick or vein?
This is not a blood test. Providers offer it only as a home kit with a vaginal swab.
