What it measures
Antibodies to the core protein of the hepatitis B virus (anti-HBc). They are made after any hepatitis B infection, current or past, but not after vaccination. An IgM type points to a recent infection.

Checking whether a person has ever had hepatitis B.
Read with the surface antigen and surface antibody tests to show past, current or no infection.
Checking before a medicine that lowers immunity, as a past hepatitis B infection can become active again.
