What it measures
Antibodies to the hepatitis A virus. IgM antibodies point to a recent infection, and IgG antibodies show a past infection or vaccination. Hepatitis A is usually spread through contaminated food or water.
Why people test it
- Investigating jaundice or other signs of hepatitis, especially after travel.
- Checking immunity before travel or a job where hepatitis A is a risk.
- Checking after contact with someone who has hepatitis A.
Typical range
There is no numeric range. The result is reported as positive or negative for each antibody tested, and the report says whether it measured IgM, IgG or total antibodies. The report shows how that lab reports it.
Finger-prick or vein?
A finger-prick sample is usually fine for an antibody test like this, and some providers offer a home kit. Most take blood from a vein, at a clinic or with a visiting nurse.
