What it measures
Unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) is the part of transferrin's iron-carrying capacity that is not yet filled with iron. Added to serum iron, it gives the total iron binding capacity (TIBC).
Why people test it
Part of iron studies, used with serum iron to work out total iron binding capacity.
Read alongside ferritin when looking into low or high iron.
Measured when tiredness or anaemia prompts a look at iron levels.
Part of the iron studies some endurance athletes check alongside ferritin.
Typical range
Ranges vary by lab, method, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own range.
Finger-prick or vein?
Both routes are offered, though most providers take it from a vein.
Every UIBC test, cheapest first
Cheapest first, whether the test is of UIBC alone (marked "single-marker test") or a panel that includes it. Each price is all-in: the test and the cheapest way to have the blood taken that suits this marker, before any discount code.
