What it measures
The zinc in a whole blood sample, with the cells left in. Red cells hold most of the zinc in blood, so the result reads much higher than the standard serum zinc test.
Why people test it
- Part of a mineral screen that reads several minerals in whole blood from one sample.
- Checked by people on plant-based diets, where zinc intake and absorption can be lower.
- Checked by people who want a reading that includes the zinc inside red cells.
Typical range
Ranges vary by lab, method, age and sex, and your report shows the lab's own range. A whole blood result cannot be compared with a serum zinc range.
Finger-prick or vein?
Offered as a vein draw only. A screen of several minerals needs more blood than a finger-prick gives, and zinc on the skin can get into a finger-prick sample.
