What it measures
The amount of hepatitis B virus DNA in the blood, measured by PCR. It shows how much virus is present and how actively it is multiplying.
Why people test it
- Monitoring people with long-term (chronic) hepatitis B.
- Monitoring the virus in people on antiviral medicine for hepatitis B.
Typical range
Results are given in international units per millilitre (IU/mL), or as not detected when the amount is below what the test can measure. That lowest level varies by lab and method, and your report shows the lab's own limits.
Finger-prick or vein?
Providers offer this test only from a vein sample, taken at a clinic or by a visiting nurse.
