What it measures
The genetic material (RNA) of the hepatitis C virus in the blood, measured by PCR. Finding it shows a current infection, and the amount shows how much virus is present.
Why people test it
- Confirming a current infection after a positive antibody test.
- Checking for a very recent infection, before antibodies appear.
- Checking whether the virus has gone after a course of antiviral medicine.
Typical range
Results are given in international units per millilitre (IU/mL), or as not detected when the amount is below what the test can measure. That lowest level varies by lab and method, and your report shows the lab's own limits.
Finger-prick or vein?
Providers offer this test only from a vein sample, taken at a clinic or by a visiting nurse.
