What it measures
DNA of human papillomavirus (HPV) in a swab sample. Tests usually look for the high-risk types that can cause changes to the cells of the cervix, and some also name the type found. Most people get HPV at some point, and it usually clears without causing problems.
Why people test it
- NHS cervical screening checks the sample for high-risk HPV types first.
- Checking for HPV between screening appointments or outside the screening age range.
- Investigating genital warts, which some HPV types cause.
Typical range
There is no numeric range. The result is reported as detected or not detected (sometimes positive or negative), and some labs name the types found. The report shows how that lab reports it.
Finger-prick or vein?
This is not a blood test. It uses a swab, most often a vaginal swab taken at home. Kits that combine it with blood tests take the blood separately.
