What it measures
Looks for the DNA of the mpox (monkeypox) virus in a swab from a skin lesion, such as a spot, blister or scab. It uses PCR, which picks up very small amounts of the virus's genetic material.
Why people test it
- Tested when a new rash, spots or blisters appear, especially after close contact with someone who has mpox.
- Used to tell mpox apart from other causes of a rash, such as chickenpox or herpes.
Typical range
Reported as detected or not detected. Methods vary between labs, and your report shows how the lab reads the result.
Finger-prick or vein?
A swab, not blood. Offered as a kit only, and it needs a spot, blister or scab to swab.
