What it measures
Antibodies to the rubella (German measles) virus. IgG antibodies show past vaccination or infection; IgM antibodies point to a recent infection.
Why people test it
- Checked before or during pregnancy, as rubella in early pregnancy can affect the baby's development.
- Checked to confirm immunity when vaccination records are missing or unclear.
- Asked for by some employers and courses, such as in healthcare.
Typical range
Reported as positive, negative or equivocal, sometimes with an antibody level. Methods and cut-offs vary between labs, and your report shows how the lab reads the result.
Finger-prick or vein?
Offered as a vein draw only, alone or in a combined measles, mumps and rubella antibody test.
