What it measures
Antibodies to Schistosoma, parasitic worms picked up from fresh water in parts of Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East. The infection is called bilharzia or schistosomiasis. A positive result shows infection at some point and can stay positive for years.
Why people test it
- Checked after swimming, wading or washing in lakes or rivers where bilharzia is found.
- Part of post-travel screens, as many infections cause no symptoms at first.
Typical range
Reported as positive or negative (detected or not detected). Methods and cut-offs vary between labs, and your report shows how the lab reads the result.
Finger-prick or vein?
Offered as a vein draw only, often within a post-travel screen.
