What it measures
Trichomonas vaginalis is a small parasite passed on through sex, which causes the infection trichomoniasis. The test looks for its genetic material in urine or a swab, using a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT).
Why people test it
- Tested when there is unusual discharge, itching, soreness or pain passing urine.
- Checked when a sexual partner has been diagnosed with it.
- Part of wider sexual health screens.
Typical range
Reported as detected or not detected. Methods vary between labs, and your report shows how the lab reads the result.
Finger-prick or vein?
A urine sample or a swab, not blood. In wider sexual health panels it is sent alongside a blood sample for other infections.
