What it measures
IgM and IgG antibodies to the Zika virus, which is spread mainly by mosquitoes in tropical areas and can also pass through sex. IgM points to a recent infection; IgG shows infection at some point.
Why people test it
- Tested after travel to a Zika area, especially before or during pregnancy, as Zika in pregnancy can affect the baby.
- Checked after a rash, fever or joint pain following travel to a Zika area.
Typical range
Reported as positive, negative or equivocal for each antibody type; antibodies to related viruses, such as dengue, can cross-react. Methods and cut-offs vary between labs, and your report shows how the lab reads the result.
