What it measures
Looks for the genetic material (RNA) of the Zika virus in a urine sample, using PCR. The virus is found only for a limited time after infection, so the test suits a recent infection; antibody tests pick up older ones.
Why people test it
- Tested soon after a rash, fever or joint pain following travel to a Zika area.
- Checked after travel to a Zika area before or during pregnancy.
Typical range
Reported as detected or not detected. Methods vary between labs, and your report shows how the lab reads the result.
Finger-prick or vein?
A urine sample, not blood. Offered as a kit only.
